SELINSGROVE — Every Thursday, the Selinsgrove Seals go over the two-minute drill in practice just in case it will be needed.
Friday night against rival Jersey Shore it was, and the Seals showed that practice really does make perfect as they executed the drive to perfection on the way to a 31-10 win over the Bulldogs on the new turf at Harold L. Bolig Memorial Stadium.
“I told the guys at halftime that they might never see a two-minute drill executed like that,” said Seals coach Derek Hicks. “It was just super impressive.”
That wasn’t the only thing that impressed Hicks. Freshman quarterback Danny Shoch completed 23 of 30 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns in front of the home crowd.
“What can I say about Danny,” said Hicks. “He put on a show tonight.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Selinsgrove used a lucky bounce on a third-and-36 play when the ball went off two Jersey Shore defenders and right into the hands of Josh Nylund down to the Bulldogs’ 20. Four plays later, Shoch found Ben Swineford for a 10-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.
“Sometimes you just got to be lucky in this game,” said Hicks when asked about the catch by Nylund. “Josh showed tremendous focus to stay with the ball and make the catch.”
Both teams traded field goals in the frame and the score was 10-3 with 1:34 left in the half, and that is when the Seals pulled off perfection.
“We practice the two-minute drill every Thursday,” said Shoch. “I came home from practice last night and told my dad it felt really good.
“Everybody did an amazing job.”
Selinsgrove got the ball on its 24 and a quick out to Nylund followed by a pass interference call moved the ball to the Seals 47. The drive seemed to stall on a holding call, but the Seals responded with a 20-yard pass from Shoch to Swineford before Shoch found Nyland on a 14-yard post pattern to make it 17-3 with just three seconds left in the half.
“For a freshman quarterback to show that amount of poise was just amazing,” said Hicks. “We overcame a lot of adversity during that drive and it really paid off.”
Nylund and Swineford finished the day with 100 yards receiving.
“We practice this and all we needed to do was get open,” Nylund said. “And we did just that.”
As for what it looked like on the other side.
“We knew Selisngrove is very good at knowing where the chains are and moving the ball down the field,” Shore coach Tom Gravish said. “They did that during that drive.
“We just had a few things not go our way and that was our downfall.”
The drive seemed to take all the energy out of the Bulldogs as they ran just 12 offensive plays in the third quarter and even after they intercepted Shoch for good field position, they turned the ball over on the next play.
The Seals, on the other hand, put the game away with a Joe Khan 41-yard touchdown reception off of a swing pass and a Nate Schon 13-yard run to make it 31-3.
Shore added a late score to set the final at 31-10.
“We played a good game,” said Hicks. “We knew it is always going to be a battle against Jersey Shore and it was today.”
