SELINSGROVE — A four-year starter for Shamokin, senior Blake Zalar has seen it all for the Indians.

Well, everything but what happened on Friday night at Harold L. Bolig Memorial Field.

"That is the most complete game we've played in the four years I've played," Zalar said. "I don't think we've ever mercy-ruled somebody."

The Indians defensive line dominated up front, while Colin Bowers scored three touchdowns — two rushing and one on an interception return — as Shamokin dominated Selinsgrove, 44-8, in Heartland Athletic Conference-Division I action.

"I can't say enough about our defense. They really got things going," Shamokin coach Henry Hynoski said. "It was just well-rounded football. This is the most complete game we've played."

Selinsgrove managed just 91 yards of total offense and seven first downs. Until a fourth-quarter touchdown drive when the game was already being played with a running clock, Shamokin had allowed negative 12 yards on the ground.

The Indians had five sacks and forced both Seals' quarterbacks — Danny Shoch and Coy Bastian — to scramble multiple times.

"We wanted to put pressure on them," Zalar said. "We saw on film if we got to the quarterback we could really rattle them, which we did."

Shamokin (4-3 overall, 3-1 HAC-I) takes control of the HAC-I race and needs a win over Shikellamy in two weeks to claim at least a share of the title. Lewisburg, which beat the Braves 42-21 on Friday, is also 3-1 HAC-I and travels to Jersey Shore (2-1) next week.

The Indians opted to put their defense on the field first. A quick three-and-out forced a punt that gave Shamokin's offense a short field, taking over at the Selinsgrove 43.

Shamokin faced a fourth-and-10 from the Seals 26, but Bowers eluded two tacklers in the backfield and scrambled 24 yards down to the 2 to set up Brycen James' short TD run with 7:25 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

The Seals (3-4, 2-2) cut the lead to 7-2 when Miciah Showers sacked Bowers in the end zone with a little over two minutes left in the first quarter.

Each team punted twice and the Seals missed on a fake punt before Shamokin added another score when Bowers hit Joey Masser for 10-yard gain on third-and-9, followed by a Bowers 37-yard TD run. A poor snap on the extra point left the Indians ahead 13-2 at the half.

The Indians have failed to put teams away at times, but not Friday. On the first offensive play of the third quarter, Bowers went up top to Mark Wetzel for a 58-yard gain down to the Selinsgrove 1.

"Colin Bowers had one of the best games, I've ever seen a player have," Hynoski said.

After back-to-back procedure penalties, James carried on back-to-back plays, the second one for a 3-yard TD and a 20-2 advantage with 10:44 left in the third quarter.

By the time, the third-quarter horn sounded, Shamokin had the running clock going. After a Selinsgrove punt, the Indians went 86 yards in 12 plays capped by a short Bowers touchdown run with 3:04 left in the third for a 27-2 lead. Bowers returned an interception 30 yards for a score with 1:58 left before a Wetzel interception set up Jameson Kramer's 33-yard field goal for a 37-2 Shamokin lead with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.

"What you saw on film out of (Shamokin) is exactly what they did. We tried a million different things and just couldn't get a stop," Selinsgrove coach Derek Hicks said. "The offensive line struggled, the quarterbacks struggled. It's one of those things, we have two young quarterbacks, we just have to keep working to get better."

Aaron Frasch added a TD run for the Indians in the fourth quarter before Seals quarterback Danny Shoch scored from the 9 to account for the only Selinsgrove score.
