ATHENS - Lewisburg dominated all aspects of the game as they out played Athens both offensively and defensively during the opening round of the 2011 District 4 AA tournament. The Green Dragons had success both throwing and running the football. Camden Cassells, quarterback of the Green Dragons, went 4-8 passing for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Lewisburg ran for 346 yards on the ground against the struggling Athens' defense. Jared Liano led the rushing attack for the Green Dragons as he carried the ball 12 times for 77 yards and a touchdown. The Green Dragons would win the game, 35-7.

The Green Dragons of Lewisburg would start the scoring early. They received the ball after stopping the Wildcats, forcing them to go three-and-out. They used the strength of their running game to drive the field going 38 yards on three rushes. With the ball resting on their own eight yard line, Joseph Gardner received the handoff and took the ball directly up the middle for a touchdown. Brady Ferster would then convert the extra point. The Green Dragons would yet again receive the football after stopping Athens on another three-and-out. They would capitalize for the second straight time as they once again used their running game to drive the field. Jared Liano would then take the handoff from the Lewisburg line of scrimmage and headed right up the middle. With a few side-steps, a spin move, and a few missed tackles, he would find himself in the end zone for a rushing touchdown. Ferster would yet again convert on the PAT.

The Wildcats showed some life in the second quarter as they drove the field to their own 36-yard line on their next drive to only have to punt the ball. Stivason's punt was perfect as it was spotted on the one yard line. Lewisburg would drive the entire field to their own 13 where they faced a fourth and three. Cassells would fire a perfect pass towards the sideline. Liano would catch the ball, but would then drop it after a spectacular hit by Athens' Adam McCauley. With new life, the 'Cats offense took the field. They would yet again go three-and-out. Lewisburg would take advantage of the good field position as they drove to their own one yard line, starting from their own 35. Gardner would then take the handoff and plow into the middle, following his linemen into the end zone for his second rushing touchdown on the evening. Ferster would tack on the PAT. The Green Dragons entered half time up, 21-0.

The Athens defense showed new life as they forced Lewisburg to turn the ball over on downs, but the offense would not take advantage of the defense's turn over. After an Athens punt, the Green Dragons would yet again drive the field to their own 9-yard line. Cassells would then take the snap and drop back; he then fired a pass into the end zone, which was caught by a wide-open Caleb Saffell for another Green Dragon touchdown. Ferster would tack on the PAT.

Lewisburg would stop the Wildcats and force them to another three-and-out. On Lewisburg's next drive following the Wildcats' ensuing possession, quarterback Camden Cassells would toss the ball over the middle into the hands of Liano. Liano would help increase Cassells stats as he would do the rest; breaking tackles as he found his way into the end zone. Fester would convert the PAT. The Wildcats would show some life on offense on their next possession. After passing twice prior, Nick Carl, Athens quarterback, tossed a perfect pass over the middle into the arms of Brad Sampson. Sampson headed to the sideline where he cut up field and was off to the races. Sampson would glide into the end zone for the Wildcats' one and only touchdown on the evening. Troy Stivason would then convert the extra point. On Lewisburg's first play from scrimmage on their next possession, Alex Feria would put the ball on the ground as Ray McDougan of the Wildcats would scoop it up and return it for a touchdown, only to have it called back for holding. Troy Stivason, replacing Carl, would roll out to his left and throw an interception to end the game. The Green Dragons advance in the District 4 AA tournament with a 35-7 victory over the hosting Wildcats of Athens.

Nick Carl went 7-13 passing for 82 yards and one touchdown. Casey Shiposh led the ground attack for the Wildcats as he carried the ball 11 times for 50 yards. Brad Sampson was the lead receiver for the Wildcats and the game as he caught two passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Caleb Saffell was the lead receiver for the Green Dragons as he caught two passes for 36 yards and a touchdown. Lewisburg will play Mount Carmel next Friday night.
