TOWANDA — Jamie Wecker has resigned as the Towanda Area School District's head football coach, the Towanda High School principal said on Monday.
The issue of Wecker's resignation was raised during the visitors' comment portion of Monday's Towanda School Board meeting, when physical education teacher Karl Raffin< asked about the resignation.
"Did he submit a letter of resignation?" Raffin asked. "It was kind of a surprise.&"
High School Principal Dennis Peachey then read out loud Wecker's letter of resignation which stated: "I am resigning as head football coach effective immediately. I believe this is in the best interest of the football program, which is very dear to me, and, most importantly, to my family."
The letter did not give any more specifics on why he resigned.
Wecker said that, if the school board wished, he and his team would continue to coach the football team during the off-season, until a new head football coach is hired.
Peachey recommended that the school board take Wecker up on his offer, but the board has not yet made a decision on that matter.
Wecker has served as the school district's head football coach for the past four years where he compiled a record of 18-25.
